Disable Windows Recall
Windows 11's Recall feature periodically takes screenshots of your activity to create a searchable history. While useful for productivity, this creates significant privacy concerns. Your screen content, including sensitive information, is stored locally and could potentially be accessed by malware or unauthorized users.
What Recall Does
When enabled, Windows Recall:
- Takes screenshots every few seconds
- Uses AI to make screenshot content searchable
- Stores this data in a local database
- Allows you to "rewind" and see past activity
The screenshots capture everything visible on screen, including passwords as you type them, private messages, financial information, and any other sensitive content.
Privacy Concerns
Sensitive data capture. Recall doesn't distinguish between sensitive and non-sensitive content. Bank accounts, private communications, and personal documents are all captured.
Local storage vulnerability. While Microsoft states the data is encrypted, local storage can still be vulnerable to malware or physical device access.
No perfect filtering. Even with filtering for sensitive sites, content displayed in other applications isn't excluded.
Using Stealth's Disable Feature
Stealth provides a simple toggle to disable Windows Recall:
- Open Settings → Security
- Find Disable Windows Recall
- Toggle it to On
Stealth disables Recall at the system level, preventing screenshots from being taken. Existing Recall data is not deleted. You must do that manually through Windows settings if desired.
What Happens When Disabled
When you disable Recall through Stealth:
- Screenshot capture stops immediately
- No new data is added to the Recall database
- The Recall interface in Windows becomes inactive
- System resources used by Recall are freed
You can re-enable Recall at any time by toggling the setting off.
Clearing Existing Recall Data
Disabling Recall doesn't delete existing data. To clear previous screenshots:
- Open Windows Settings
- Navigate to Privacy & Security → Recall
- Click "Delete all" or select specific date ranges to remove
This permanently removes stored screenshots and the searchable index built from them.
Complementary Privacy Steps
Beyond disabling Recall, consider these additional privacy measures:
Disable activity history. Windows Settings → Privacy → Activity History
Review app permissions. Control which apps can access camera, microphone, and location
Enable VPN. Stealth's VPN encrypts your internet activity
Use private browsing. For sensitive web activity, use browser privacy modes
For Organizations
If you manage multiple computers, Recall should be a security policy consideration. The feature's data collection presents risks that may not align with data protection requirements or security policies.
Stealth's disable feature works per-machine. For enterprise deployment, Group Policy can centrally manage Recall settings.
